THE SEVENFOLD FLOPPED THEIR MISSION IN KING’S CROSS, and Artemis still couldn’t believe it. She’d done as she was told back in the station, making sure to stay in the hallway as her squad took on the hosts, and silently observed how each of them fought.

None of them were banking on Abyan going rogue.

Artemis had watched in horror as she turned on their friends, letting Khalo slip from grasp. Yet that wasn’t the most bizarre thing about the mission—it was Harry. Not once did he move to stop the mutiny in The Sevenfold even though it meant that the first gen escaped. All he did was stare at the fight, face utterly unreadable, and stand in the shadows of the platform.

The whole squad was shaken after the BLCC order, but Abyan was more so than everyone else, staring off into the distance at nothing and everything as she walked out from the tunnel.

Artemis wrung her fingers as she entered the kitchen, too lost in her thoughts to notice the whole squad was already there, save for Abyan. Piles and piles of notes on their hacked files were scattered around the countertop—so far they’d discovered that Carlisle Enterprises was working on not one, but three Nosaru infection cures: a vaccine, a surgery, and an electrotherapy. While they hadn’t got far enough into the files to find anything on the abnormal host activity they’d witnessed, Artemis knew they were close.

“We need an intervention,” Kade said, putting her hands on her hips.

The rest of the squad eyed each other warily, but Artemis could see where she was coming from. With their failed mission, The Sevenfold would officially be the second-best team at Carlisle when the leaderboard updated the following Monday, and as much as some of them didn’t want to admit it, the fault landed squarely on Abyan.

It wasn’t the easiest pill to swallow.

“That’s going a little far, Kade,” Hank said, trying hard to keep his demeanour relaxed, but Artemis could see how tense he was. “Don’t you think?”

Artemis took a seat at the breakfast table beside Mason and watched the squad draw their lines in the sand and turn on each other, not knowing how she could possibly make the situation better.

Kade took a step toward him, and everyone in the room twitched simultaneously. “If you would just tell us what she’s hiding, then we wouldn’t have this problem. We lost first place because of her. How can you be okay with this?”

“It’s not my secret to tell.” His eyes blazed, red creeping fast up his neck. “If you really cared about Yan, then you’d respect her wishes instead of trying to pressure her into telling you something she obviously isn’t ready to.”

“Hey, we might not be talking right now, but I love her just as much as you do.” She jabbed a finger at him. “Don’t ever question that, King.”

Though there was still a good ten paces separating them, Hassan stepped in the gap, keeping his eyes on both Kade and Hank.
